Per Olov Enquist was born in 1934 in Sweden, and his plays have been produced across Europe. The Night of the Tribades, first produced in the UK at Hampstead Theatre in 1978, is set during a rehearsal for Strindberg’s play The Stronger and offers a fascinating insight into the relationship between Strindberg’s life and art. In Rain Snakes (1981), the storyteller Hans Christian Anderson and famous Danish actress Heiberg mercilessly strip each other of hidden secrets. The Hour of the Lynx (1981) is an examination of guilt and the search for redemption of a young boy killer. In The Image Makers (1998), originally directed by Ingmar Bergman, Enquist dramatizes the fictional meeting between the Swedish winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, Selma Lagerlöf, and three other artists making the film of her classic novel, The Coachman of Death.

This volume contains translations by Gunilla Anderman, Charlotte Barslund, and Kim Dambæk.
